A 22-year-old man from Lombard died following an  in-line skating accident in Lombard, according to the DuPage County Coroner’s Office.

The man, identified as Christopher Michaels, of the 0-90 block of west 19th Street in Lombard,  was crossing Roosevelt Road at Highland Avenue about 9 p.m. Tuesday when he was struck by a motorist.

“He was crossing Roosevelt Road north to south on an angle,” said Sergeant John Malatia of the Lombard Police Department.

Malatia said Michaels was struck by a van.

“The driver didn’t see him,” Malatia said. “She kind of clipped him and he flipped over the van.”

Michaels was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove with multiple traumatic injuries, the coroner’s office reported. He was pronounced dead by hospital staff at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday.

According to the coroner’s office,  the death was consistent with trauma related to injuries from being struck by a motor vehicle, and no autopsy is pending.

Malatia said the police department is continuing to investigate, but he does not expect any charges against the motorist.

“It appears to be just a horrific accident,” Malatia said.

He said poor visibility at the intersection played a role in the accident.

“There is lighting, but it’s not one of our brighter intersections,” he said. “I’m sure she didn’t see him due to the conditions.”
