Kevin Beach of St. Charles North High School

This season, Kevin Beach hopes to break St. Charles North's two-year streak of losing regional championship games.

While high school senior Kevin Beach hopes that his volleyball team can go undefeated in conference play, he’d also like to break St. Charles North’s two-year streak of losses in regional championship games. Head coach Todd Weimer said that Beach is a consistent blocker and attacker, and his floor defense is constantly improving. In an April 30 game against Larkin, Beach recorded seven kills.

Weimer said that Beach’s “passion and desire to win every point is evident through his actions. In school, he works extremely hard and as a person, he is kind, sincere and compassionate.”

How long have you played volleyball? 3 Years

What do you love most about volleyball?

I love the intensity. Volleyball is a game of momentum swings and energy, I feel like the team that comes out with the most fire has a better chance of coming out on top. I’m one of the most competitive people around, and I love to bring this energy to my team, holding nothing back during matches while still maintaining good sportsmanship.

What are your goals for this season? How will you achieve them?

Our main goals this year [are] to win a conference championship by finishing undefeated in our conference, and to win a regional championship, if not a sectional championship. While we do have big expectations for this year’s playoffs, I think we will achieve our goals by taking things one step at a time. We will need to work for very match, every game, and every point and focus on playing the game the way we know we can play it.

What are you looking forward to most this season?

We have 12 seniors on the roster and I am looking forward to seeing the progression of this team as we move along. I’ve been playing with these guys ever since the start of my volleyball career, so we all have great chemistry together and we have a very balanced attack all around. The thing I’m looking forward to most is this season is redeeming ourselves in the playoffs. The program has lost two consecutive regional championship games, and I would definitely be thrilled to be on the team that ended that streak.

Do you have any rituals or superstitions when you play?

I always have to be chewing gum while playing in matches.

Who has inspired you most in your athletic endeavors?

My older brother. He was a senior and a leader on the 2010 [St. Charles] North volleyball team that won a regional championship and I’ve always wanted to live up to that. He is now a junior at Carthage College playing middle hitter on their volleyball team.

If you didn’t play volleyball, what would you be doing?

I would probably spend most of my days working and saving up money for college.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Paul Konerko. I grew up a fan of the White Sox and he was the hero of the 2005 team that won the World Series so he has always been my sports icon. He is one of the most humble athletes around and he goes about his business professionally, appreciating and acknowledging the fact that he wouldn’t be where he’s at today without the support of his family, friends and fans.

What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside volleyball?

I enjoy playing any sport. I played baseball as a freshman so I like to play the occasional backyard baseball game. Over the summer I practically live at basketball, tennis, and volleyball courts playing pickup games with my friends. I also enjoy working out and lifting weights.
