Prep sports profile: Jeff Spinello
Jeff Spinello plans to represent Deerfield High School gymnastics in the all-around competition at State.
Name: Jeff Spinello
Age/year in school: 17/Junior
Sport: Boy's Gymnastics
How long have you participated in gymnastics?
I started at a club when I was really young, around kindergarten. I did [that] for a few years, and then decided to take a break from it. I started back up my 8th grade year when my brother was a junior on the high school team, and I have continued ever since.
What do you love most about gymnastics?
The competitiveness. I like that everyone wants to surpass each other, skill wise. It makes the sport that much more interesting because it motivates me to be the best I can, so I can surpass some of the higher-level gymnasts.
What are your goals for this season? How will you achieve them?
To make it to state as an all-arounder. I have worked towards this goal by working hard every day in practice and listening to my coach.
What are you looking forward to most this season?
The pay-off at the end of the year. Last year I missed making state by a very small margin, but this year I am determined. I have practiced so hard [and] I am just looking for my hard work to pay off.
Do you have any rituals or superstitions before you compete?
I usually high-five my twin brother before my routine because it gives me the confidence to do my best.
Who has inspired you most in your athletic endeavors?
Both my older brother and my coach. My older brother was a talented gymnast, and I look up to him as a role model. I hope to accomplish everything that he has done, and more. My coach is one of, if not the best, coaches in high school gymnastics. I am very proud to be taught by him and it makes me work hard every day.
If you didn’t participate in gymnastics, what would you be doing?
I am a three-sport athlete, competing in soccer, wrestling and gymnastics, so I would be training in the offseason for one of those other two sports.
Who is your favorite athlete and why?
Olympic wrestler Dan Gable because of his determination and his hard work.
What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside gymnastics?
I like hanging out with friends, wrestling, playing soccer or anything else that keeps me busy.
