Fire coach Frank Yallop is expected to complete his staff this week with the addition of retired midfielder Clint Mathis, a club source confirmed late Monday.
The appointment is expected to be announced later this week as the team prepares to gather at Toyota Park for physicals and the official start of the 2014 preseason.
Mathis, 37, played for five different Major League Soccer teams and scored 61 goals in 258 regular season games through a 12-year pro career that included an MLS Cup in 2009 with Real Salt Lake.
He also made 46 appearances with the U.S. national men’s team between 1998 and 2005, including an appearance in the 2002 World Cup in South Korea.
Mathis’ international career included stops in Greece (2008) and in the German Bundesliga with Hanover 96 (2004-05).
