Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s communications director is leaving the job at the end of the year, making her the first top aide to depart his young administration.
Chris Mather said she is not sure what’s next. But December 31 will be her last day.
Mather has been with Emanuel since he took office on May 16. Prior to running the mayor’s media shop she was the communications director for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
“While it was difficult to leave the Obama Administration, I was thrilled to be offered the opportunity to come back home and help ensure Mayor Emanuel's smooth transition at a time when Chicago faced enormous challenges,” Mather said in a statement. “Helping Mayor Emanuel hit the ground running has been an all-consuming, 24-7 job but one I have truly enjoyed and thoroughly appreciated. I wish the Mayor and his team the best of luck.”
Sarah Hamilton, who runs the press shop for Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, will replace Mather. Hamilton and Mather will work together on the transition over the next two weeks, according to the mayor's office.
