The Cubs optioned pitcher Chris Carpenter to AAA Iowa on Saturday, using his spot to activate Carlos Zambrano from the disabled list.

Carpenter appeared in 10 games as a reliever and posted a 2.79 ERA while striking out eight in 9 2/3 innings. His place as long reliever will be taken by Ramon Ortiz, who was moved out of the rotation to make room for Zamrbano.

“(Carpenter) did a great job here, but with the makeup of the bullpen, I think he needs to go pitch and get command of his slider,” manager Mike Quade said.
