PEORIA, Ariz. -- Blake DeWitt returned to the lineup over the weekend, Darwin Barney made a start against the Mariners on Monday and Ian Stewart is scheduled to return Tuesday, so the Cubs’ injury list is starting to dwindle.

Barney has missed time with a strained left side but said tests show no serious damage and that he was looking forward to returning against Seattle.

“You just want to be careful,” he said. “This time of year, you just want to make sure you’re at full strength.”

Travis Wood started for the Cubs on Monday but may have pitched his way out of rotation consideration in an eventual 12-7 Cubs' victory.

He was spotted a seven-run lead in the first inning but left with no outs in the third inning in a 7-7 tie. The Mariners hit three homers, including two in a row before manager Dale Sveum removed Wood.

The Cubs had batted around in the first inning with Joe Mather singling home two of the runs.
