If you love food and Chicago (not necessarily in that order) then tune in to TLC’s “Fabulous Cakes” at 8 p.m. Monday, May 16, on the Discovery Channel to watch a trio of this town’s cake artists—Alliance Bakery’s Peter Rios, TipsyCake’s Naomi Levine and Amy Beck of Amy Beck Cake's Design—create fondant fantasies. The series cruises the country to Las Vegas, L.A., Boston, San Francisco and The Carolinas, plus this week's Chicago visit in search of extraordinary custom cakes.

Don’t know a fondant from a ganache? No problem. You don’t even need a sweet tooth to appreciate the ingenuity, design skills, artistry and engineering concepts that go into creating some fantastic cakes.

Best slice of the night? OK, we’re biased, but you’ve got to love Alliance Bakery’s Chicago icons cake that includes a sweet Tribune Tower. The cake was created by chef Rios who was approached to create a cake for the wrap party last November following the first season of Chicago Live!, the stage and radio show produced by the Chicago Tribune in partnership with The Second City.

Best place to catch the episode? At the “Chicago Live! Fabulous Cakes” viewing party. That starts at 7:30 p.m., and the show starts at 8 p.m. Monday at the Billy Goat Tavern (430 N. Michigan Ave., lower level).

Add this to your foodie file: Chef Rick Tramonto, formerly of Tru, now with a New Orleans project called Restaurant R'evolution and with a new book, "Scars of a Chef," will be joining the May 19 Chicago Live! lineup.
