Bon Appetit just released its 50 Best New Restaurants list, and two Chicago newcomers made the cut.

Andrew Knowlton, who writes the magazine's BA Foodist column, praised Balena (1633 N. Halsted St., 312-867-3888), mentioning its proximity to Steppenwolf Theatre but noting, "the real attraction is what's on the plate." Yusho got specific mentions of its cod chawan mushi dish and inventive soft-serve desserts.

Also in the Bon Appetit top 50 is Davanti Enoteca (1359 W. Taylor St., 312-226-5550), but Knowlton specifically mentioned the San Diego location, though he acknowledged the Little Italy original. We suspect owner Scott Harris will take it.

These 50 Best New Restaurants will be winnowed to a "Hot 10" list, including Knowlton's pick for the best new restaurant in the country, to be released Aug. 14.

Meantime, see all 50 picks here.
