Recently protesters have been pounding the pavement in front of fast food restaurants like McDonald’s and other such establishments, to raise the minimum wage to as much as $15 per hour. They have been encouraged by politicians like Mayor Rahm Emanuel and President Barack Obama.
I would like to suggest to them that their protests and efforts are misdirected by focusing on corporations and the federal government for their demands. States are free to raise their own minimum wage laws as high as they wish. Perhaps they should take their demands to Springfield where Democrats (the most vocal and outspoken supporters of raising the minimum wage) are in complete control.
Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn, Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan and Democraic Senate Leader John Cullerton should have no problem granting their wish if they truly believe in what their party preaches. If they feel it’s easier to continue to shift the blame to corporations or political opponents, then the protesters may be out of luck.
