DeKALB—Cary-Grove's Corey Bruns did more than pitch a complete game in Thursday's Class 4A sectional semifinal at DeKalb.
The senior right-hander also contributed with a second-inning solo home run that proved to be the game-winner in a 6-0 victory over Fox Valley rival Huntley.
"Unfortunately I walk a lot of guys and they are a great hitting team and had a few shots off me," said Bruns, who beat the Red Raiders 4-3 in a regular-season meeting. "Our defense helped me out a lot with double plays in back-to-back innings ... and outfielders got to everything. It was a great defensively played game."
Junior Eric Chandler added a leadoff home run in the third and the Trojans sent seven men to the plate in a three-run fourth to build a 5-0 lead.
Huntley (30-7) had men on second and third and one out in the second, but Bruns coaxed infield groundouts from the next two batters. In the fourth, the Red Raiders had bases loaded with one out, but Bruns retired center fielder Craig Lipp on a pop up and then struck out right fielder Chris Klein on a full count to end the inning.
"My changeup was working today," Bruns said. "My curveball was missing low but with the changeup, I was able to keep them off balance.
Zach Liebman, who gave up four runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings, took the loss for Huntley.
