Reprieve from sun
The Shade Foundation of America is teaming up with the Bowie Ice Arena to offer kids a fun reprieve from the summer sun. Kids will be able to ice skate for free from noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Aug. 1. Skate rentals also will be free. The first 200 attendees will receive a UV Frisbee that changes color when exposed to the sun.
The Shade Foundation is the only national children's foundation devoted to skin cancer education and prevention. The 501©(3) nonprofit organization was established in 2002 by founder Shonda Schilling, after her battle with malignant melanoma.

BG4W Habitat team leader Maria Arnold will present the four elements of habitat, with an emphasis on sustainable gardening practices, and explain how property owners can certify their habitat through NWF. Jamie Vavra, Bowie Green Team chairman, will lead a tour of the new native plant rain garden next to the parking lot.

Montpelier Mansion, 9650 Muirkirk Road in Laurel, will host "Blast-in-the-Past: A Hands-On History Playground" for ages 2 and older.
