  1. Progress on immigration

Just when Washington looked like it was completely preoccupied with the scandals, real and imaginary, swirling around the White House, a group of Democrats and Republicans in the Senate managed the unexpected (and, these days, extraordinary): They agreed on something. The vote Tuesday night in the Senate Judiciary Committee to forward to the floor a massive overhaul of the nation's immigration system was, to be sure, a small step and doesn't guarantee success in the full Senate, much less the House of Representatives. But it is, at least, a hopeful sign that gridlock in this divided government is not inevitable.

  7. Immigration deformed

There's the story of a woman with five kids who was asked: If she had to do it all over again, would she have five children?
There's the story of a woman with five kids who was asked: If she had to do it all over again, would she have five children? "Yes," she said, "just not these five." That's the way I feel about the immigration "reform" bill introduced by the Senate's...

  15. The myths that undermine Medicare and Social Security

The talk in Washington and among opinion leaders around the country's budget issues today centers on "balance" and "responsibility." Many conservatives declare that these terms mean that there should be no new revenue, only spending cuts to programs such as Social Security and Medicare. They also propose to reduc cost of living adjustments for all Social Security recipients, a group of Americans who have seen traditional pensions eliminated and savings devastated by the Great Recession — and who rely more and more on our Social Security system, into which they paid during their entire working lives.
