1. Revisiting Maryland's 2008 football recruiting class: The defense

Four years ago last month I covered my first Maryland football Signing Day for The Baltimore Sun. There wasn't a consensus opinion on the Terps' 2008 recruiting class -- Rivals.com ranked it the No. 38 group in the country, while Scout.com had it listed as the 52nd-best class nationally. So how did Maryland's 2008 group ultimately stack up? Today we’ll revisit my 2008 superlatives for defense and find out. Click here for a look at the offensive players.

  7. Legendary Colts tight end John Mackey dies at 69

John Mackey changed the game of football on and off the field. The former Baltimore Colt brought grace to a position that had been known for its brutality, and he made the first real headway in the NFL players' fight to earn a more equal share of the pie.

  9. John Mackey: A revolutionary player on the field, a true force off of it

In death, legendary Baltimore Colts tight end John Mackey will undoubtedly be remembered for how he played the game. The 6-foot, 2-inch, 230-pounder who played from 1963 to 1972 set the standard for his position, combining speed and power like no tight end who had ever taken the field. As his former coach Don Shula told the Baltimore Sun, "Previous to John, tight ends were big strong guys like [Mike] Ditka and [Ron] Kramer who would block and catch short passes over the middle. Mackey gave us a tight end who weighed 230, ran a 4.6 and could catch the bomb. It was a weapon other teams didn't have." He was the second player at his position ever elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and college football's award for best tight endbears his name.

  18. Neverending NFL lockout: Don't hate the players, hate the game

Frustration is understandable as the NFL lockout stretches into the weekend. On Thursday, there was premature speculation that the lockout had ended. The owners agreed on their proposal and sent it over to the players for approval. But ESPN is reporting that the NFL Players Association will not vote on the proposal until Monday, shredding the post-lockout schedule the owners released Thursday.

  22. Owners couldn't resist one last power play, but deal will get done

If you study the history of American business, one thing you quickly learn is that billionaires don't typically amass their wealth and power by innovation alone. They often do it by imposing their will and flexing their financial might. Negotiating deals worth billions of dollars is not for the timid, and it also doesn't require that both sides play nice.
