The first Metra trains to roll out Thursday morning were filled with raucous Blackhawks fans, squeezed next to the usually quiet commuters, with delays running nearly up to an hour or longer because of the crush of passengers and some mechanical problems.
The worst delays were on the BNSF line, where a mechanical breakdown and switching problems added to the problem of loading extra passengers.
At 8 a.m., inbound trains on the BNSF line were stopped after Train No. 1220 experienced mechanical problems at Halsted. Metra planned to push the train into Union Station.
Trains on the Rock Island reported delays of 40 minutes, also because of mechanical problems.
