Ann Elizabeth Smith, a community volunteer and Republican Party activist, died of a stroke Saturday at Gilchrist Hospice Care. The Glen Arm resident was 87.
Born Ann Elizabeth Pierce in Evanston, Ill., she was the daughter of Ralph Pierce, personnel director for the Marshall Field's department stores, and Theresa Worthington Bethel, a homemaker.
She earned a degree in Greek and Latin at Smith College.
While at a church function, she met her future husband, William R. Smith, who went on to become the Canton Railroad's president.
