  1. Elizabeth Catlett blended art, social goals

    Baltimore Sun reporter
One of Elizabeth Catlett's linotypes could horrify viewers by depicting the aftermath of a lynching, the rope around the victim's neck held taut by the murderers' boots. And in the next room, a statue by Catlett of a mother and child would flood viewers...

  7. Summer Festivals 2012: Litchfield Jazz Festival at Goshen Fairgrounds

It's the 17th season for one of Connecticut's — and the Northeast's — greatest jazz events, the Litchfield Jazz Festival, which this year has moved back to its previous location at the Goshen Fairgrounds (by popular demand). (They've also shifted this year's dates further into August to accommodate fans who want to hit the ever-popular Newport Jazz Festival.) Now, that's what you call bending over backward for your patrons. But they accomplish that feat in another, more important sense: year after year, they manage to land some of the jazz world's hottest acts, and this year's lineup is no different: the remarkable pianist Helen Sung and her trio, the Sojourner Truth Project featuring bassist Avery Sharpe, trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, the Benny Green Quartet, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, saxman Miguel Zenón (pictured), Hubert Laws and many other talented, fleet-fingered folks. Stick around for a multitude of artist talks, student performances and tons of other enticing treats, musical and otherwise.
