17. Bradley Manning: Hero or villain?

Bradley Manning is on trial for leaking a video of a U.S. helicopter attack that killed several Iraqi civilians. Two Reuters reporters were killed in the attack and at least two children were wounded. Manning is suspected of leaking tens of thousands reports on the war in Afghanistan, many on civilian deaths. Daniel Ellsberg, who released records four decades ago on the U.S. war in Southeast Asia, said: "In releasing documents and videos to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks, Manning made an enormously positive impact on world events. He revealed the terrifying misdeeds by American and coalition forces, such as the 2007 Baghdad airstrike that targeted and killed at least 12 Iraqi civilians.” Supporters point out that he released low-level state “secrets” that don’t seem to have harmed anyone. But others say he’s a traitor for releasing classified documents and that he many have endangered lives. What’s your view?
