  3. Save with your library card

Maryland libraries rank among the best in the country. You pay for them. Now get your money's worth. The movies you rent. The books you buy for $25 and $35 apiece. The video games costing $50 and more. Barney DVDs. They're often at the library, in most...

  7. Rookie educators need more support

My first reaction to that cell-phone video of Jolita Berry being pummeled by one of her students was this: Any one of the teachers of my youth could have taken that girl, easy. But then, I didn't go to Reginald F. Lewis High School in Baltimore; I went to...

  9. The Roots' 'Tipping Point' is rap for grown-ups

    Sun Pop Music Critic
Some folks just aren't feeling it. The Tipping Point, the Roots' new joint released earlier this month, has received perhaps the worst reviews of any of the group's six other CDs. "The band's seventh album doesn't lack for nerve," The Washington Post...

  11. By the 'Numb3rs': Actress Diane Farr's job hunting closeup

I began auditioning for acting jobs at the ripe old age of 12. Thirty years later, including a 15-year run on television, I sometimes just get offers for work. Often, however, I am still required to run pell-mell around Los Angeles or New York, interviewing for film and TV jobs.

  13. Virtual intimacy is 'like' this

The college admissions process for the class of 2016 is thankfully over, save for those still on wait lists. With social media growing rapidly, much of the intimacy of delivering good news about college — and pretty much everything else — has disintegrated. These days, when applicants are admitted to college, their friends and followers now know instantly. Many post "Official _____ Class of 2016" while others revert to ALL CAPS and an annoying overload of !!!!!!!!!!s. Even if someone doesn't post news about his acceptance, a quickly growing string of "Congratulations!!!" will flood his wall, thanks to Facebook bundling topically similar posts.
