    At only 28 years of age, jazz bassist and singer Esperanza Spalding already has a Grammy under her belt, after winning for Best New Artist in 2011. It was a huge coup for the jazz world, who've claimed her as one of her own. But she's also a crossover threat, winning scores of new pop fans with every tour stop. She'll swing through Storrs on Thursday as part of her Radio Music Society tour, bringing with her sounds you'll rarely hear from anyone else in the industry.

  3. Ebène Quartet Performs at the Jorgensen Center in Storrs on April 19

    If hip, eclectic string quartets are your thing, go hear the four young Parisians of the Ebène Quartet, who'll do Mozart, Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky this Friday at the Jorgensen Center. It's tough to stand out among the throngs of hotshot chamber players these days; the Ebène-ers do it through incredible musicianship and an interesting repertoire, which includes jazz and rock. That's not to say, however, that they've abandoned the canon — their 2006 Haydn CD was critically acclaimed, along with their recordings of Debussy, Ravel and Fauré string quartets, for which they won a Gramophone award. UConn prof Glenn Stanley gives a pre-concert talk at 6:45 p.m., if you're really enthused.

  4. Wale Performs at the Jorgensen Center in Storrs on April 11

    Noted rapper and "go-go" beat specialist Wale will be appearing at the Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts in Storrs on April 11. The artist &mdash; who gained national fame in 2007 with his mixtapes <em>100 Miles and Running </em>and <em>The Mixtape About Nothing </em>&ndash; just released his newest full length album <em>The Gifted </em>on Rick Ross's Maybach Music Group Label. Later this year, Wale will be releasing <em>The Album About Nothing</em>, which will feature a collaboration with Jerry Seinfeld. The Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts is located at 2132 Hillside Road on the UConn campus in Storrs.   7. Of Puppets and Princes

    Antoine de Saint-Exup&eacute;ry's infamous children's tale <em>The Little Prince </em>meets the puppets (pictured), live actors and musicians of Pennsylvania's Bristol Riverside Theatre, as they swing through Storrs on March 3. The puppets were designed by Emmy recipient Michael Schupbach and Monkey Boys Productions, the designers behind the recent Broadway production of <em>Little Shop of Horrors</em>. (If they can handle a giant, talking plant, diminuative royal family members, sheep and pilots are, well, child's play.) One show only.

  8. Gus Mazzocca Exhibit at Contemporary Art Galleries in Storrs Examines 4 Decades of Printmaking

    Until his retirement last year, Gus Mozzocca taught printmaking at the University of Connecticut for 40 years (imagine how much grading he had to do). To celebrate his long career, Contemporary Art Galleries at UConn, headed by Barry Rosenberg, put together a retrospective entitled 4 Decades/4 Generations, taking place on two different campus sites &mdash; the Galleries and the nearby Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts, which hosts a group exhibit of works by four artists who studied under Mazzocca. Mazzocca's artistic legacy (that's his "All Leveled Up Totem (self-image)," a 2004 mixed-image collage, pictured above), the exhibit shows, is undoubtedly as secure as his legacy as a teacher.

    There's a Jake Shimabukuro of any instrument. You could say Jimi Hendrix was the Jake Shimabukuro of the electric guitar, or that Bonzo was Led Zep's resident Shimabukuro behind the skins. You wouldn't be way off the mark to suggest Winston Churchill was the Jake Shimabukuro of international diplomacy. FDR Shimabukuro-d the hell out of the Great Depression. Alas, there's only one JS of the ubiquitous ukelele, that diminutive stringed device usually heard strangled to near-death up by the register of Guitar Center. He does things you wouldn't believe. (Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" on the ukelele? C'mon, now.) Head to Storrs on Nov. 29, and hear a uke transformed into a symphony orchestra.
