1. Two new dance parties keep Red Maple spry

At 10 p.m. on a recent Thursday night, Red Maple, the lounge in Mount Vernon, was as quiet as an Old West movie town before a gunfight. Even the tumbleweeds were away, possibly pre-gaming somewhere else.

5. How to hold a séance

Special to SunSpot
While I'm sitting at Border's reading "The Idiot's Guide to Being Psychic," the guy who brings me an order of hummus says: "Don't read this, just eat a lot of acid." Although this isn't exactly what I had in mind as far as discovering the ins and outs...

7. How to succeed in kindergarten

Four years ago, while expecting a third child, my biggest concern about having a summer baby was the likely discomfort of being pregnant in the July heat. Little did I know then that having a son with a summer birthday would mean the difficult decision I am facing now that he is 4: whether to enroll him in kindergarten on schedule or hold him back for an extra year of preschool.

13. There is a generational gap in the Indiana fan base

There is a growing disconnect within the IU basketball community. Countless IU media members and long time supporters believe there is no reason to be overly excited about a team in the early stages of a long season. A similar belief by veteran IU fans would prohibit court rushing in almost every situation. The current student contingent is already dreaming of a tournament appearance and gearing up for court flooding in the coming months. The never ending discussions on student attendance at games and structure of the GA section are picking up steam.

First of two parts
Los Angeles Times Staff Writers
First of two parts Philip Berg's new wife was young, beautiful and worldly, everything that he, a middle-aged orthodox rabbi, wasn't. Karen Berg could be pushy too. She brought a television into their home over his objections. She tossed out his...

17. Theater review: 'Media' from Empty Spaces Theater Co./Tod Kimbro

One of the criticisms of our media age is how it can isolate us as much as connect us. We're like voyeurs, watching others' problems on reality TV from afar. On Facebook and Twitter, we communicate in pithy phrases or even one word — "like" — instead of through heartfelt conversation.

19. A new age for New Age music

In late 2009, noise-pop group Animal Collective followed up its critics-poll-topping album "Merriweather Post Pavilion" with a stopgap EP, "Fall Be Kind." It generated buzz for featuring the first-ever licensed Grateful Dead sample, but what was more peculiar was a curlicue of pan flute woven into the song "Glaze" and credited to Gheorghe Zamfir. Zamfir, as the Romanian pan flute musician is best known, was a ubiquitous presence on television in the '80s, peddling wispy flute albums. For many people, it was one of the first sounds that came to be known by the label of New Age music.

23. Yutz's mutterings yield some universal truths

Half the time I was laughing during the bracingly unsentimental coming-of-age comedy "Submarine," I wasn't even sure why. Writer-director Richard Ayoade's adaptation of the Joe Dunthorne debut novel isn't merely joke-funny. It's texture-funny, which is harder, considering the locale: starkly beautiful, gray-toned Swansea, Wales, onetime home of Catherine Zeta-Jones, Dylan Thomas and, according to Dunthorne, an endless supply of sexual frustration.
