For some people it isn't summer until they've had their first hot dog at a backyard barbeque or sunk their toes in the sand at the beach. In the Lehigh Valley, however, many locals will swear that summer isn't here until they are relaxing in the twilight on a blanket or lawn chair listening to the Allentown Band. The band, which is a regular summer-time attraction in Allentown's West Park at 16th and Turner streets, has been entertaining audiences since 1828. At 178 years old, it is the oldest civilian concert band in the United States and is best known for its patriotic John Philip Sousa selections.
