Located on 188.5 acres west of Delray Beach, the Morikami is a Palm Beach County park featuring authentic Japanese-style gardens, a restaurant and a museum. The museum has rotating exhibitions with a permanent collection and items from private collectors and other museums. Bonnie White LeMay is the Morikami's museum administrator. Larry Rosensweig, a past museum director said "The Museum's mission to promote understanding of the Japanese culture is carried through to the gardens, which illustrate the Japanese approach to nature over the centuries." The museum is named after George Morikami, a former Delray Beach resident who was part of the 1920s Yamato colony, a group of early Japanese farmers who settled in Palm Beach County. The Yamato Colony was established by Jo Sakai in 1905. A few other settlers branched out into other commercial endeavors. Colony residents built homes and raised families on the land. Florida business and political leaders supported the Japanese colony because they believed that the project would introduce new crops and farming techniques to the State. According to the Morikami Museum, for several years these settlers grew pineapples for shipment to markets in the north. By the end of the century's first decade competition from Cuban pineapples caused many area growers, including those in the Yamato Colony, to turn to winter vegetables. Few of the settlers remained in Yamato for very long, but those who did sometimes returned to Japan briefly to marry and bring wives to the colony. Families soon grew. Ironically prosperity during World War I and the land "boom" of the 1920's resulted in many of the settlers leaving. By the beginning of World War II, few Japanese remained. In May 1942, farmland in the Yamato area still owned by Japanese was confiscated by the U. S. government for a military installation. After World War II George Morikami purchased the land. Almost 20 years later he began what would become a 10-year campaign to give the land away, first to the city of Delray Beach and later to Palm Beach County. The county finally accepted the elderly farmer's generous gift in 1973. Eventually Morikami, who died in 1976 at the age of 89, was made an honorary mayor by Delray Beach. Each year, the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens welcomes more than 163,000 visitors. The Morikami hosts annual events, including the New Year's Bon Festival and the Hatsume Festival each spring. The museum boasts a restaurant called the Cornell Cafe, which serves Pan-Asian cuisine. The Morikami Museum is located at 4000 Morikami Park Road, west of Delray Beach.
