1. Weekend Athlete: Chrysler PT Cruiser Redux

KickingTires
Awhile back, I tested the Chrysler PT Cruiser and folded the rear seats only partially before I put all my toys in. This creates a load floor that's not level, which I didn't like. Readers correctly pinged me about not......

3. Emanuel, usually the vise, now in one

The Swamp
by Frank James Rep. Rahm Emanuel, the intense, profane yet quite personable Illinois congressman who normally is the one putting the pressure on, is now in the vise himself, with President-elect Obama asking him to be White House chief of......

7. Fleming, Graham charm Lyric audience with rare duo recital

Lyric Opera patrons attending the duo recital by soprano Renee Fleming and mezzo-soprano Susan Graham Thursday night at the Civic Opera House probably did not expect they would be getting a guided tour of belle epoque Paris along with an exquisitely performed program of French songs.

9. What statement did the 'American Gothic' knockoff make about public art?

It's not a shocker, really, that the figures lifted from one of American art's most famous images and made enormous and three-dimensional have proved so popular.

11. Summer brings out much of the best in Chicago area

Every now and then I make a list of nine things I've liked lately. Here's one for the approach to summer. 1. Lake Michigan I love the lake in its lonelier seasons, too, but now, when the warmth comes back and the people come out, the lakefront reminds...

13. Being numb to it all no longer big shock

Sometime in the next few weeks, if you're walking down Fullerton Avenue around DePaul University and have 15 minutes to spare, duck into the tidy brick building alongside the CTA station. Here you will find the DePaul Art Museum, an institution so humble that only "Art Museum" is spelled across its modest facade. The admission is free, though the lessons offered in its first gallery, at least through June 16, feel priceless.

15. The Goodman Theatre celebrates a decade of drama

"I sort of like the snowstorm," Robert Falls said in the lobby of the new, $46 million Goodman Theatre on the night of its inaugural performance. "It keeps the riffraff out. The people who are here are really here to see a play and not just socialize." It was a classic Falls assertion.
When the new $46 million Goodman Theatre opened its doors on Dec. 11, 2000, with the inaugural performance of August Wilson's "King Hedley II," the Loop was beset by a blizzard. Ever cognizant of the political perils of Chicago snowstorms, Mayor Richard...

21. How theater ticket prices are changing like airline fares

When the Goodman Theatre announced its prices for its current production, "Sweet Bird of Youth," starring Diane Lane, it listed $89 as the top ticket price for that show, a price that duly appeared in this newspaper. And had you bought your decent main-floor seat for the Oct. 27 performance three weeks ago, $89 is indeed what you likely would have paid. On Wednesday afternoon, there still were tickets available on the Goodman website for that Saturday evening performance. But the top price? $120.

23. Readers share ratings, quibbles

The awards season has run its course. It's always a relief to see it in the rearview mirror. Even the winners feel that way.
