Art Basel is a sweeping international art fair that shows modern and contemporary works from the 20th and 21st century. Thousands of artists, curators, collectors, dealers, critics and art lovers gather each year to view art works - from noted icons such as Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollack, Andy Warhol and Louise Bourgeois to cutting edge works by Karen Kilimnik, Gregory Crewdson, Wangechi Mutu, Mark Ryden and Doug Aitkens. Now in its 38th year, the fair shows all mediums of art, including drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, installation and digital and video art. Art Basel runs for five days twice a year. In early June the fair unfolds upon the city of Basel in Switzerland, where the Rhine river also meets with France and Germany, making the art fair easy to reach throughout Western Europe and a Mecca for international culture and events. In early December Art Basel opens in the city of Miami Beach, Florida. It is the American sister event to Basel in Switzerland, and it boasts more than 200 prominent art galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia. More than 1500 art works will exhibit at the fair's main hall at the Miami Beach Convention Center in the heart of the Art Deco District. Also within the center: group shows curated by galleries and salon conversations with noted artists, architects, curators and authors. A video lounge screens contemporary video art works across the street at the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens. Live performances and shipping containers filled with pieces by emerging artists are located a few blocks south at Collins Park, Miami Beach, and public art by international artists will appear throughout the city during Basel. Art Basel Miami Beach has spawned more than two dozen satellite fairs and exhibitions, many of which are housed across the bay in the downtown Miami neighborhoods of Wynwood and the Design District. These fairs include Art Miami, Aqua Art Miami, Scope, Design Miami, Pulse, Flow, the AIPAD Photography Show and Photo Miami. Exhibitions are housed at the Rubell Family Collection, the Margulies Collection at the Warehouse and MOCA at Goldman Warehouse.
