Northern has 33 lettermen and 17 starters returning this season.
Mud, rain, cold, two hurt quarterbacks (Mick Wysuph and Greg Gabler) and a 1,200-mile one way trip hurt the Wolves as they fell to the host Texas A&I Javelinas 20-0 Nov. 30 in the NAIA national semifinals in front of 8,500 fans. More than 11,000 fans bought tickets, but many stayed away because of the horrible weather. Swisher stunned his players after the game, telling them he would retire. He recommended assistant coach and former Northern State standout Jim Kretchman for the job, and his recommendation was followed. Swisher remained as the school’s athletic director. This was Swisher’s 23rd season.
Texas A&I would lose to Troy State 43-35 in the 1968 national championship, but the Javelinas would go on to win the 1969 and 1970 national titles.
