BROOKINGS - 4-H members from Carthage and Stockholm took top honors in the eighth annual 4-H CHARACTER COUNTS! public speaking contest.
Sixty-four South Dakota youth participated in the contest, held Aug. 10 during the Sioux Empire Fair. The event was open to South Dakota 4-H'ers. They were asked to speak on the theme of how CHARACTER COUNTS! connects with a personal experience, a 4-H project, or a current event.
In the senior division, Levi Hattervig from Carthage received first place, and was the winner of a $1,000 scholarship. Second place and a $500 scholarship went to Mark Sperry from Bath. Finishing third, in the senior division was Courtney Nolz from Mitchell and the 4th place finisher was Nathaniel Steinlicht from Milbank.
In the junior division, Kiera Leddy from Stockholm was the first-place winner. She received a $500 certificate of deposit. Receiving second-place honors and a $250 CD was Emily Kluin of Brandon. The third-place junior winner was Elisabeth Kluin, from Brandon.
In the Junior novice division Sydney Walker of Watertown won $100.
