Quartet heads to state for CIF Track & Field Championships

Four local prep athletes will be in Clovis this weekend for the 2014 CIF Track and Field State Championships.

The athletes are Cassie Durgy and George Gleason of Huntington Beach High, and Eamon Smythe and AJ Beynon of Edison. The quartet will take part in the preliminaries competition Friday at Buchanan High. The state finals are Saturday.

The four advanced from the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet held May 30 at Cerritos College in Norwalk. At State, Durgy will be seeded 11th in the girls' 800-meter run, Gleason eighth in the boys' 1,600-meter run, Smythe 16th in the boys' 800-meter run, and Beynon qualified for State in both the boys' 300-meter hurdles (seeded 15th) and high jump (seeded 19th).

800-meter run: 6. Cassie Durgy, Huntington Beach, 2:11.89; 1,600-meter run: 7. Julia Sienski, Edison, 4:55.97.


800-meter run: 4. Eamon Smythe, Edison, 1:54.46, 9. Cooper Kossick, Edison, 1:56.08; 1,600-meter run: 7. George Gleason, Huntington Beach, 4:12.87; 300 meter hurdles: 6. AJ Beynon, Edison, 38.54; High jump: 6. AJ Beynon, Edison 6-07.00, 14. Hunter Kist, Edison, 6-03.00.

Boys' Volleyball

Marina High announced Monday that Paul Muñoz is the new head coach of the school's boys' and girls' volleyball programs.

Muñoz, who resigned this year after serving as head coach for four years at Estancia, takes over for Rob Kijewski who resigned after coaching the Vikings the past four years. Muñoz played collegiate volleyball at Long Beach St. and from 2005-2011, trained with the USA Men's National Team and competed at the World University Games in Turkey in 2006-2007.
