SANTA ANA — Senior keeper Kendall Mulvaney made eight saves for the Sea Kings in their opener of the Mater Dei Premier Invitational tournament Thursday at Mater Dei.
Despite the loss to Santiago, ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division 2, CdM Coach Bryan Middleton said it was his team's best game of the season. CdM (1-2-2) nearly tied it in the 60th minute after Birkley Sigband's free kick went down off the crossbar, but Sabrina Roy's follow was just wide.
CdM continues tournament play against Aliso Niguel, the top-ranked team in Division 1, at 4 p.m. Friday at Mater Dei. Middleton said he will be without seven starters for that game, including defenders Brianna Westrup and Molly Keasey, who are on vacation.
Middleton said starting midfielder Shelby Brown will miss time after suffering a concussion near the end of Tuesday's Battle of the Bay game.
Newport Harbor defeated Back Bay rival Corona del Mar, 54-18, and topped Estancia, 56-8, in a nonleague tri-meet on Thursday.
The win over CdM allowed the Sailors to keep the perpetual Golden Singlet trophy that goes to the series winner for the third straight season.
Newport Harbor team captain Andrew Craft came from behind to defeat a CdM rival in the third period at 145 pounds to create a highlight in the win over CdM.
Brett Beaudette, who pinned one 182-pound foe and Roberto Rivera, who posted one pin at 185 pounds, were among Sailors who went 2-0.
Also unbeaten for Newport were Luis Preciado (152 pounds), and Garrett O'Neill (220).
