Sierra Brown notched 20 kills and eight digs to help lead the host Pirates to a 25-17, 25-21, 25-14 Orange Empire Conference-opening win Friday.

Carina Perez had a match-high 22 digs and Megan Ritchie dished out 27 assistsf for the Pirates (6-0, 1-0 in conference), ranked No. 8 in the most recent state polls.

The Gauchos are 4-4, 0-1.

OCC returns to action Wednesday at Fullerton College (6 p.m.) before returning to the Peterson Gym on Friday night against rival Golden West (6 p.m.).

MEN'S SOCCER

UC Davis 2, UC Irvine 0

The host Aggies upset the No. 25-ranked Anteaters in the Big West Conference opener for both teams Friday.

UC Davis (5-4-1, 1-0-0 in conference) scored a goal in each half and outshot UCI, 10-8. Goalie Michael Breslin made five saves for the Anteaters (5-3-2, 0-1-0).

UC Santa Barbara 1, UC Irvine 0

The visiting Anteaters outshot the Gauchos, 13-7, but fell in their Big West Conference opener Friday.

USCB (7-4-1, 1-0-0 in conference) scored in the 43rd minute. Goalie Corey Tobin made three saves for UCI (5-5-0, 0-1-0).

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

NCAA Inter-Regional Jamboree

SACRAMENTO — Junior Alex Tebbe led UC Irvine Friday.

Tebbe toured the 8,000-meter course in 24 minutes, 40 seconds to finish 31st of 134 runners at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex.

Riley Martin finished 48th in 25:01, Nolan Del Valle was 56th in 25:05, Amir Shirif 80th in 25:36 and Tommy Newton-Neal 81st in 25:37.

Blake Wanser placed 96th (25:53) and Conor Stanton 102nd (26:02) to complete the Anteater lineup.

Rajpaul Pannu of Saint Mary's was the individual champion in 23:28 and UCLA won the team competition with 54 points. UCI placed eighth with 247 points.

The 'Eaters compete in the Vanguard Invitational Oct. 12 at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

NCAA Inter-Regional Jamboree

SACRAMENTO — Senior Carlotta Pham was UC Irvine's top runner Friday.

Pham finished 89th in 18:24 over the 5,000-meter course at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex.

Alice Yang placed 105th in 18:48, Kaycee Holcomb was 107th in 18:50 and Hannah Ruby 120th with a time of 19:00.

Marthie Ponty was 126th (19:08), Mary Follo 129th (19:10), Makenna McGrann 131st (19:17) and Marisa Gonzalez placed 144th (19:44).

Cal's Kelsey Santisteban won the race in 16:23 and UCLA captured the team title with 77 points. UCI finished 16th with 474 points.

The Anteaters return to action Oct. 12 in the Vanguard Invitational at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa.
