Briefs: Tarbut V' Torah makes history

The Tarbut V'Torah boys' soccer team defeated Saddleback Valley Christian, 4-0, on Tuesday, capping an undefeated San Joaquin League season and claiming the first outright league crown in program history.

Dan Friedman and Zev Gollis each scored twice for the Lions, who finished 12-0-2 in league. Friedman's second goal was assisted by freshman Aaron Berdy. Friedman has a league-best 33 goals this season.

Gollis' second goal came midway through the second half on a breakaway, putting the game out of reach. He has 22 goals this season.

Jordan Leberman, Julius Herzlinger and goalie Jonas Hassan anchored Tarbut's defense. Evan Bozanic, Amit Silverstein and Gollis controlled the center midfield area.

"I'm very proud of the boys," first-year Coach Darren Spicer said after the victory. "They showed a lot of character today, playing hard in tough conditions after a difficult game [Monday] at Avalon. But they deserve this league title and every player on the team has contributed to our success. I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do in CIF."

Tarbut V'Torah will learn its first-round playoff opponent Monday, with the CIF Southern Section Division VI playoff brackets are released.

Needham to UCI

Karleene Needham, a senior at Rim of the World High, is the latest signee announced by the UC Irvine women's soccer program.

Needham had 28 goals and 14 assists in the 2010-11 season, when the three-time all-league performer was also All-CIF Southern Section.

Needham played club soccer at Legends FC (2008-10), West Coast FC (2010-11), and is currently with Platinum FC .

"[Needham] is a player who I saw for the first time from a distance across two fields," UCI Coach Scott Juniper said. "She fired a shot from 30 yards into the top corner of the net and it was such a well-taken shot I scribbled an "URGENT" note in my book to find out who she was. Since then, I have seen Kalene develop into a fearsome forward who has the potential to become a prolific goal-scorer at the D-I level."

UCI won back-to-back Big West Conference regular-season titles and went to the NCAA Tournament in 2010 and 2011, advancing to the Sweet 16 in 2010.
