Pasadena’s California Institute of Technology on Wednesday was awarded $2.4 million by the Department of Energy to work on solar energy technology, according to the Department of Energy.
The federal agency announced $130 million in awards for 66 projects around the country, including $33 million for 18 projects in California.
Caltech received $2.4 million to back research into an optical device that splits sunlight into individual color bands to more efficiently convert sunlight into power.
Other grant winners include the University of Southern California, UC Santa Barbara and several schools and firms in Northern California.
FOR THE RECORD: An earlier version of this post erroneously stated Caltech also shared with UC Berkeley a $4 million grant to improve monitoring of the state’s power grid.
