Lawrence County, Ind.
A Lawrence County family devastated by a vicious attack on their dogs. Someone shot their three dogs, safely penned up in their backyard. One of the dogs died. Another was seriously injured. The third dog was hit five times, but only had superficial wounds.
When Curt Hackler pulled up to his home Monday, he knew instantly something was wrong.
"They always come to gates."
Hackler said his dog Taffy came up to him covered in blood. He said he saw his Beagle dead under a tree.
Hackler hadn't even moved into the home. He's remodeling it still and had just finished building the dog pen. The dogs were spending their first night in their new home when they were shot with a .22 caliber gun.
"Upon examination it is pretty obvious Barney's been shot thru the left eye," said Dr. R.S. Medlock with the Bedford Veterinary Medical Centre.
Barney was in the worst shape of the two who survived. Wednesday night, there was still some swelling on his brain. Taffy, the other dog was shot five different times.
"Whoever shot her tried to shoot her in the eye also but the projectile entered the eyelid and exited here," Medlock said.
Taffy was doing okay as of Wednesday night, but Barney still has a ways to go.
Hackler said he's not sure of what to do next.
"I moved out here thinking I'd never have to worry about it. Now, I'm afraid to bring my girls out here."
There is a reward for information leading to an arrest of the person who shot the three dogs. Contact the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department if you have any information.
