SWAT suspect shoots himself after altercation involving ex-girlfriend

Indianapolis

IMPD says 29-year-old Courtney Sarver shot a man and beat his ex-girlfriend before taking his own life in Lawrence Wednesday morning.

Police said it started at a home in the 3700 block of Sadlier Drive around 7:30 a.m. When officers arrived, they found 35-year-old Steven Tam suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest and the woman, 39-year-old Kiona Leland had been beaten with a gun and a boat oar.

Officers tracked Sarver to his home two miles away in the 4800 block of Leone Drive in Lawrence where he barricaded himself inside his detached garage. At about 8:20 a.m., police told neighbors to leave their homes and both Lawrence and Indianapolis SWAT officers were called to the scene.

Officers attempted to make contact with Sarver, but he took his own life with a rifle that police discovered next to his body at 11:30 a.m. Neighbors said they never suspected this from Sarver.

"Never had any real trouble with him. He seemed like a fairly decent guy," said Stephen St. Peters who lives next door.

Lee Dusendschon who lives on the other side of Sarver's home said, "I never met them but my husband has and he says the guy was very nice and have always been nice to us."

Tam's condition was upgraded to serious Wednesday evening. Kiona Leland, who was taken to the hospital in serious condition, continued to recover Wednesday night. Four children and the woman who lived in the home with Sarver are safe and with family.
Nearby schools were put on lockdown during the stand off.
