According to Metro police, an employee at a northwest side Kroger grocery store shot a would-be robber in the face, Monday evening. The man died a few hours later.
It happened at the Kroger near 71st Street and Georgetown Road a little after 6 p.m.
Witnesses told police a man in his 20's walked into the store and placed a hard object into the back of a female employee. The suspect then forced the victim to the office area where another employee shot him in the face.
The suspect was taken to Wishard Hospital in serious condition, but later died. His identity has not been released pending notification of family.
Jenee Petty was inside the store in the makeup aisle when she heard at least three shots.
"I'm thinking maybe some stock fell over… anything but a gunshot, please," said Petty.
Her worst fear proved to be true when she heard an employee tell a co-worker someone had been hit and was bleeding.
At first, Petty said she froze in fear, but then her survival instincts kicked in and she peeked around the corner to see where the shooting happened.
She said she kept wondering if she could leave.
"I don't want to stay in this confined space with someone that has a gun," said Petty.
After about five minutes, Petty said she and other customers left the store. She's not sure when she'll go back.
"It gives me a feeling of anxiety."
Homicide detectives, working along with the Marion County Prosecutor’s office, advise that an arrest isn't expected in this case.
