Greenwood neighborhood on alert after reported sexual assault

Greenwood, Ind.

Residents in a Greenwood neighborhood were on high alert Tuesday after a violent sexual assault over the weekend.

Police are stepping up patrols, and the entire investigations division of the Greenwood Police Department is looking for leads that could help find the suspect.

A young woman told police she was raped inside her home Sunday morning at the Ashmore Trace Apartments near U.S 31 and Smith Valley Road in Greenwood.

In response, the apartment handed out flyers to residents on Tuesday warning them about the situation and advising them how to be safe.

Kayla Goodwin couldn't sleep Monday night knowing the suspect was still out there, but she's doing what she can to protect herself and her family.

"We're going right now to measure my windows and go and find locks and put bars in the windows and just keep everything locked at all times and be safe," Goodwin said.

Asst. Chief Matthew Fillenwarth said Greenwood police have made this case a top priority.

"We've had a lot of people calling in and a lot of really good information and lot of tips are coming in," Fillenwarth told Fox59. "Our entire investigations division is right now out hopping and jumping and they are following up on these leads."

The suspect is described as a white man in his 30s with a mustache, a goatee and scruffy facial hair. He also has a tattoo of bricks coming down one arm and a tattoo of a tiger tail on his leg.

Police think the suspect also tried to break into another home just hours before, scaring a teenage girl and her mother.

Anyone with information should call Greenwood Police Department or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
