In a vote taken from the coaches, media and sports information directors, the Bulldogs were tabbed as the favorites in men's basketball for the 2011-2012 season.
This is the third consecutive year that Brad Stevens' team has been chosen for this honor.
Butler received 28 of the possible 50 first place votes with Detroit coming in second with 19. Last sesaon the Bulldogs failed to win the regular season title but came through with the tournament championship which earned them the conference's automatic bid.
Using that momentum from the late season run, the Bulldogs won five straight games in the tournament and reached the championship game in Houston. For a second consecutive year, the Bulldogs lost in the national championship game, this time to Connecticut 53-41 at Reliant Stadium in Houston.
In the pre-season All-League squad, forward Andrew Smith was named to the second team as season after averaging 8.5 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.
Butler will open the season on the road against Evansville on November 12th.
