NEW YORK (WPIX)—The Mets dominated Josh Johnson and the Florida Marlins in a 7-1 win. David Wright got the offense going with a 2-run home run in the first inning. New Mets this season: Jason Bay, Gary Matthews, Jr., and Rod Barajas each had two hits. Johan Santana got the win, going six innings, giving up one run on four hits and striking out five. Santana looked strong despite concerns following elbow surgery late last season.
More than 41,000 Mets fans packed the new and improved stadium, now with a Mets Hall of Fame museum and dozens of reminders of the orange and blue. While some fans booed during the introduction of the Mets medical staff, most tell us they are hopeful for a healthy 2010.
Mets great Darryl Strawberry, who will be inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame in August, threw out the first pitch. In the role as catcher, Strawberry's 1986 teammate and current Mets hitting coach, Howard Johnson.
