In the fall, VMI retired the jersey of the state of Virginia's collegiate top scorer of all-time Reggie Williams. Reggie will always be remembered in Lexington, but since he has left, he has still been making a name for himself.
"I saw my jersey in the locker, took pictures of it, and it is something I will never forget," said Reggie Williams.
Williams turned a ten day NBA contract into a permanent stint with the Golden State Warriors. But life in the NBA almost did not happen for Reggie. After leading the NCAA in scoring twice, and becoming the state of Virginia's all-time collegiate scorer, Reggie went undrafted out of VMI
"It was very discouraging. I thought I was going to get drafted late second round, but it did not work out like that. I just continued to work out and work hard," said Williams.
The former Keydet had a stint in the NBA's developmental league. No sweat for Reggie who ended up leading the NBDL. Now, he goes head-to-head with the likes of Lebron James when he enters the game.
"Playing against those guys, no disrespect to those guys, I have to guard them like I am guarding anybody else," said Williams.
"He is one of my best friends on the team. He came in last year trying to make a name for himself. I was a rookie so we came in kind of young guys and we really connected last year," said Stephen Curry.
While Stephen was a high draft pick. Reggie always reminds his new friend who has the upper hand.
"He always jokes he has two plaques on his wall for the scoring title in college. He got one my sophomore year and his junior year so we always joke about how close I was to getting him," said Curry.
Reggie has made his money shooting the money ball. Afterall, he is shooting over forty percent behind the three point arc which is in the top 25 in the NBA.
"If you can add more things to your game and be more versatile on the floor you will have a job or keep one longer," said Williams.
Statistically things keep getting better for Reggie. With almost a full season under his belt, the 24 year old is averaging just under twelve points per game and has seen his three point percetage jump nearly 70 percent.
