The Edison High football team is in Hawaii this week, not only to enjoy the sights and sounds of Maui but to open its 2011 season.
The Chargers launch their campaign Friday at Baldwin High in Wailuku. The game marks the fourth time in the past 10 years (2002, 2005, 2008, 2011) that they have opened their season on the islands. The Chargers are 1-2 in their previous three visits 5-3 overall playing in Hawaii.
Friday is the first meeting between the two schools. The Bears went 9-2 last year and have won six straight Maui League championships.
Edison has 13 starters, including nine on offense, returning from a 2010 team that went 7-4 and finished second to Los Alamitos in the Sunset League race. Seven of those players are returning with honors. Among them is senior quarterback Chase Favreau, who last fall was voted the Sunset League's Offensive Player of the Year and senior wide receiver/kicker Gavin Perdomo, who was the league's 2010 Kicker of the Year.
