Hoover wins tournament: The Tornadoes captured the 11th annual Pete Brown First-Serve Tournament Saturday at West Torrance High. Hoover registered 6-0 "B" Division victories against Bishop Amat, St. Bonaventure and North Torrance before recording a 4-2 victory against West Torrance, which took the "A" Division, in the championship match.
Playing pro sets in the eight-team event, Hoover received 8-5, 8-0, 8-0 pool-play wins before earning an 8-0 championship victory. Emile Ohanyan of Hoover posted an 8-0, 8-0, 8-1 win before netting an 8-4 title win. Hoover's Vardan Adzhinyan posted 8-0, 8-0, 8-3 wins and then recorded an 8-3 title victory.
"Winning a tournament like this will give us a lot of confidence heading back [into the Pacific League]," Hoover Coach Julie Hoppe said. "We faced a lot of good competition and we got more experience."
Crescenta Valley 6, San Fernando 5 (six innings): The Falcons rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Saturday to walk off with a comeback win on the strength of a two-run single by freshman Tiffany Briscoe in the Lincoln Classic tournament. Chloe Fairbrother got the win in the circle as the Falcons improved to 4-0 on the season. The game was six innings due to tournament time constraints.
Sophomore Olivia Thayer got the win in the circle earlier in the day, as Crescenta Valley defeated Bellarmine-Jefferson, 13-5. Amber Alsaman delivered the big blast, hitting a grand slam for the Falcons.
Hoover 7, Concordia 1: The Tornadoes improved to 2-1 with a victory in the Lincoln Classic on Saturday.
Briana Manzanero went the distance and struck out seven, while Jenesy Gonzalez had two runs batted in.
Lincoln 8, Flintridge Sacred Heart 3: In the second game of a Saturday doubleheader in the Lincoln Classic, the Tologs were tied at 3 heading into the seventh, but gave up five runs. The Tologs played the game without two starters.
In their first game, they were without three starters, but still prevailed, 4-1, against L.A. Baptist on the strength of a stellar pitching performance from Alex Eaton, who went the distance and struck out 10. She also had two runs batted in and Kaitlin Powers had two hits.
Burbank 8, Whittier Christian 1: Freshman pitcher Caiylyn Brooks struck out eight to gain the win for the Bulldogs Friday in a Duarte Tournament game at Duarte High.
Nalani Hernandez was two for three with two runs scored and Lily Winn scored two runs to help pace Burbank (2-1).
Campbell Hall 6, Hoover 4: The visiting Tornadoes (3-3-1) received three hits apiece from Michael Zalin and Fidel Hernandez on Saturday in a nonleague game. Zalin had a solo home run.
Los Osos 7, Crescenta Valley 2: The Falcons (2-3) lost at Los Osos on Saturday afternoon in the Bonita Tournament.
Troy Mulcahey took the loss, giving up six runs (four earned) in four innings, before giving way to Cole Currie. At the plate, Mulcahey did turn in three hits and a run batted in, while Troy Prasertsit knocked in the other run.
BOYS' TRACK AND FIELD
Burbank 68, Crescenta Valley 68: The Bulldogs swept the 3,200-meter race Thursday in their Pacific League-opening dual meet at Crescenta Valley.
Sergio Fraire, Bernie Corea and Chris Huezo took the top three spots for Burbank, respectively, with Fraire taking first in 9 minutes 43.8 seconds. Corea and Huezo finished second and third, respectively, in 9:48.9 and 9:51.5.
