GCC baseball hopes for repeat success

For the second year in a row, the Glendale Community College baseball team will look to advance out of the California Community College Athletic Assn.'s Southern California Super Regional tournament to the state championship.

The quest through the double-elimination tournament begins today when the Vaqueros (27-10) take on fourth-seeded Mt. San Antonio College (30-8) in their tournament opener at Orange Coast Community College at 3 p.m.

Win or lose, Glendale will play at the same location Saturday against top-seeded Orange Coast Community College (33-4-1) or eighth-seeded Cypress College (24-14), which face each other Friday at 11 a.m.

Friday's winners and losers will square off with one another Saturday at a time to be determined.

Vaqueros take on Super Regional host

After sweeping through the Southern California Regional, the Glendale Community College softball team is looking for more success in the Super Regionals.

The Vaqueros (29-13) begin Super Regional play today against tournament-host and second-seeded Cypress College (38-4) at 2 p.m.

Third-seeded Mt. San Antonio and sixth-seeded Bakersfield College play at 4 p.m. Friday with the day's losers and winners squaring off in the double-elimination tournament Saturday at a time to be determined.

Duo looks to end on high note

Sevana Zargarian and Samantha Sismundo of the Glendale Community College women's tennis team realize the State Championship is perhaps the last tournament they'll compete in together.

The former Glendale High doubles tennis team takes to state in doubles with play beginning today at 4 p.m. at the Balboa Tennis Club in San Diego. Tournament doubles play carries into Saturday at 4 p.m.

Fan appreciation night set

The Crescenta Valley High baseball team will hold its fan appreciation night during its Pacific League game against rival Arcadia. The contest will begin at 7 p.m. Friday at Stengel Field.

A raffle, silent auction, bake sale, face painting, Mickey Mantle autographed picture, Dodgers tickets and other prizes will be featured. Dinner will be served by Los Gringos.

Glendale Tornado signups

A new Pop Warner football program based in Glendale and serving surrounding areas will be conducting signups for the 2012 season from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday on the football field at Hoover High School, 651 Glenwood Road, Glendale. The field is accessed through the rear entrance of the school on Olmstead Avenue.

Age-group tackle and flag football are offered, as well as a cheerleading/dance squad. Players ages 5-15 are eligible. Practices begin Aug. 1 for the season, which kicks off Aug. 26.

The registration cost, which includes equipment and game day uniform rental and practice uniform, is $280 for tackle football, flag football is $165 and cheerleading is $170, which does not include uniform cost. Discounted rates are available if all fees are paid in full by May 1.

The Glendale Tornados are also seeking coaches and athletic directors for the 2012 season.
