United Red Water Polo, which featured eight Newport Beach residents, captured the gold medal after beating Del Mar, 10-8, at UC Irvine in the highly competitive 18U platinum championship division Tuesday.

The championship match featured a tough and exciting battle in front of a standing-room-only crowd.

United Red is made up of players who attend or graduated from Mater Dei High. Newport Beach residents on the team included Neil LeVecke, Peter Seidner, John Walters, James Walters, Jeff O'Brien, Luke Wyatt, Spencer Carroll and Nick Silvers.

United Red is coached by former Olympian Chris Segesman who is the coach and the assistant athletic director at Mater Dei.
