Terps women land Class of 2019 five-star point guard

The Maryland women’s basketball team looked to Virginia for the centerpiece of its Class of 2018 recruiting haul. It’s now done the same for 2019.

Paul VI guard Ashley Owusu, rated the No. 10 overall rising junior and No. 2 point guard by HoopGurlz, committed to the Terps on Thursday, the program’s first pledge in the class.

Coincidentally, the No. 10 overall rising senior is also a College Park-bound Virginian: Colonial Forge forward Shakira Austin announced her decision in January.

Owusu was named third-team All-Met by The Washington Post as a sophomore after helping lead Paul VI to USA Today’s No. 3 ranking nationally. The 5-foot-10 guard also was invited to the U.S. under-16 national-team trials in May.

With the commit, Maryland coach Brenda Frese has landed a top-20 point guard for three of the most recent recruiting cycles. Destiny Slocum, who transferred to Oregon State after a prodigious freshman year, was rated No. 7 overall in the 2016 class by HoopGurlz, while Taylor Mikesell is the No. 20 prospect in 2018.

Incoming freshman Channise Lewis, the only natural point guard on the Terps roster, was HoopGurlz’ No. 55 prospect in the Class of 2017.
