Shakira Austin, Terps women's top recruit, named McDonald's All American

Riverdale Baptist forward Shakira Austin, one of the most highly rated recruits in Maryland women’s basketball history, was named a McDonald’s All American on Tuesday.

Austin is the No. 3 overall prospect and No. 2 forward in the HoopGurlz recruiting rankings for the Class of 2018. After winning The Free-Lance Star Player of the Year at Colonial Forge High in Stafford, Va., in her junior season, she's averaging 15.1 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game for Riverdale Baptist, according to The Washington Post. The Upper Marlboro school is No. 15 nationally in USA Today's top-25 rankings of girls basketball teams.

“Shakira is a long, athletic forward that will be extremely successful in our transition game,” Terps coach Brenda Frese said of Austin after she signed in November, along with guard Taylor Mikesell and forward-center Olivia Owens, both top-35 signees. “She is versatile, can rebound and is a tremendous shot blocker. Shakira will impact the game on both ends of the floor."

Austin will be the fourth McDonald's All American on next season's Maryland team, joining sophomore wings Kaila Charles and Blair Watson and junior forward Brianna Fraser. Senior guard Ieshia Small also was a McDonald's All American.
