Four-star CB Kenric Montgomery Jr. signs with Maryland, giving recruiting class late boost

Going into the second national signing day for 2018, Maryland football coach DJ Durkin had one scholarship left and one position to fill: cornerback. After sweating out Kenric Montgomery Jr.’s late visit to Nebraska last weekend, Durkin filled the last spot with the four-star prospect from Tampa, Fla.

Montgomery signed with Maryland on Wednesday, a key national signing day decision that bolstered the Terps at a position of need.

“Getting Ken was great. The guy’s tremendous. I think he’ll be a great player here,” Durkin said in a telephone interview. “We felt pretty strongly the past couple of days. He recently took a visit this past weekend to another school, but when he came back he told us we were all good.”

While conceding that the 6-foot-2, 165-pound Montgomery was “a little on the light side,” Durkin said, “but he’ll put that on naturally as he’s here. He’s got great ball skills. Great movement and he has length.”

Rated the No. 359 overall recruit and No. 65 Florida prospect in the 247Sports.com Composite rankings for the Class of 2018, Montgomery chose Maryland over Nebraska and Louisville.

Montgomery’s signing boosted the Terps to No. 26 in the 247Sports.com team rankings and helped replace the loss of four-star cornerback Noah Boykin. Boykin, a Woodson (D.C.) standout who committed to Maryland in July but did not sign during the early signing period, was expected to sign with Florida on Wednesday.

Montgomery is the fourth four-star recruit and second cornerback in the Terps’ incoming class, joining Woodson three-star prospect Vincent Flythe. The Terps’ class now has 23 members total.

Given that the other 22 players signed with Maryland in December, Durkin said, “This is probably the most uneventful signing day I’ve ever been a part of. This was a little different, just having one guy. Nonetheless, when you look back at the whole class and what we signed in December, I think it’s tremendous.”
