Mark Turgeon says Charles Mitchell can and will improve

Much of the early-season Maryland media attention has focused on freshman forward Charles Mitchell and his early development – particularly as a rebounder.

He’s averaging 7.8 rebounds. He’s scored in double figures the last two games.

But – as he is wont to do – Maryland coach Mark Turgeon offered a different opinion than the media.

“I don’t think he’s playing as well as everybody thinks he’s playing,” said Turgeon, who says he doesn’t pay attention to media reports about his team (you think he peeked?). “He’s got to become a lot better defender and he’s got to be a lot better screener.

“You know I’ve been pretty hard on Charles,” the coach continued. “I do think he’s going to be a better low-post scorer as time goes on. He looks like he’s ready because of the hustle plays, but he’s got a long way to go.”

Up next for Maryland is Northwestern and that pesky Princeton offense.
