It was an unusual weekend for Randy Edsall.
The Maryland football coach and his wife, Eileen, were at Syracuse, the school where the couple met. She was being honored for her achievements as a basketball and volleyball player.
The couple mingled with other honorees, including former Orange and NFL star receiver Art Monk. Edsall was a backup quarterback and played with Monk.
But here’s the thing: With Maryland playing Syracuse this Saturday, Edsall wasn’t permitted under NCAA rules to watch warmups for Syracuse’s game against Wake Forest. Nor, under the rules, was he permitted to watch the game at the Carrier Dome.
The rules are designed to prevent coaches from picking up signals or other intelligence about the opposing team.
Edsall – who said he was treated well by Syracuse -- had gained permission to attend his wife’s ceremony. But then, in his words, he was “escorted” out.
“I was escorted out of the dome and on my way back home,” he said with a smile.
