Might Maryland be interested in some of Penn State’s recruits now that the Nittany Lions are facing four years of NCAA sanctions? Or might some of the recruits – or current Penn State players -- now be looking at Maryland?
It is, as they say, a developing situation.
Here’s what Maryland coach Randy Edsall tells us: ““It’s still very early in the process and there are a lot of unknowns. Like many other schools, we are monitoring the situation and we will just have to wait and see how everything plays out."
The State of Maryland has long been fertile recruiting territory for Penn State.
As expected, Maryland senior defensive lineman Joe Vellano has been picked for the 2012 Preseason All-ACC Football Team.
He’s joined by tight end Matt Furstenburg.
Vellano seems poised for a big season.
Maryland is shifting to a 3-4 defense, and Vellano expects to play some end and some nose tackle. Most of his action is expected to come in the middle of the field.
The Vellano game that sticks with me -– a breakout of sorts, right?-- was last season’s Georgia Tech loss. Vellano had 20 tackles against the triple option and once chased down receiver Stephen Hill about 35 yards down the field.
Is this the season that Maryland formally honors former basketball coach Lefty Driesell, who won 348 games in College Park?
Driesell has a good relationship with current coach Mark Turgeon.
I asked Driesell recently if he would like to be publicly cited. “Ah, I’m not worried about that,” he said.
