Sports Terps Tracking the Terps

Terps will get PlayStation 4 systems and more for playing in Military Bowl

Surely there are members of the Maryland football team who had hoped their bowl game would take them to a more exotic outpost than Anne Arundel County.

But if you look at Sports Business Daily's breakdown of the swag give to the players at each bowl, the Military Bowl seems like a pretty desirable landing spot.

The players from Maryland and Marshall will each receive a Sony PlayStation 4, a winter hat and an Ogio backpack for playing in the Dec. 27 game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

For comparison sake, the AdvoCare V100 Bowl in Shreveport, La., widely considered Maryland's other most likely destination, gives out a Timely Watch Co. watch, a New Era skull cap and a football.

The NCAA limits the cost of these gifts to $550, but as Sports Business Daily points out, "bowl committees and gift brokers can negotiate a lower rate on products because they are buying in bulk."

In the grand scheme of amateur athletics, this custom of giving players gifts for playing in bowl games doesn't really make a ton of sense. But that's an argument for another day, and if you think the driving force behind these bowls is anything but money, I've got a New Era skull cap I'd like to sell you.
